The Ferguson protests are getting aggressive with every passing day. In recent news, it was reported that the Black Friday sales became an easy target for the protestors. The people of the area seem to have vent out their anger over the court’s decision on the retailers.
The protest, as a result of courts decision not to try a white police officer who shot and killed an unarmed youth, has taken up to protesting peacefully, outside the St. Louis Wal-Mart (NYSE:WMT) branch. About 75 protestors gathered outside the retailer branch and chanted ‘Hands up, don’t shoot’, to attract shoppers attention to the issue.
They were ordered to disperse by a small police party, which they did quite peacefully outside target (NYSE:TGT), another chosen site for their protests. Several more sites had been chosen to demonstrate similar protests on Friday.
The situation is Ferguson has improved and peaceful protests have replaced the severe demonstrations that started right after the shooting and announcement of the decision by the court. Several businesses in the area were set on fire and many arrests were made in wake of these riots.
However, since the Justice Department and the Government’s announcement of putting special focus on the event and ascertaining implementation of rule of law, the situation seems to have gotten better. Hence, the protests continue, but in more peaceful manner now.
These protest are now being strategized in a way so that the right message is passed on to the community. The protestors have promised that they will continue to engage in peaceful demonstrations, unless law prevails and the said police officer is indicted for the killing of the unarmed teenager.
Hence, before the protestors gathered outside Wal-Mart (NYSE:WMT) on Thursday evening, they had Thanksgiving dinner, prayed at the St. Louis church and strategized their next steps forward for the protests in the basement of the church.
The retailers and small business setups had feared for their safety and expected the Black Friday sales to be effected by these protests. The fear was generated by a string of severe protests that took place right after the incident. A large volume of police force was deployed for this purpose so as to ensure peace and quiet over the holiday period.
Even though, the protestors have promised that the demonstrations will continue and they will gather outside several local locations to record their protest, things seem to have calmed down.
The police officer at the center of the whole controversy has been placed on administrative leave and claims that he used his weapon in self-defense when he shot the teenager. The Missouri Governor had imposed a state of emergency in the region even prior to the courts verdict was reported. In a town of 21,000 people, mostly black; a total of 2,200 police troops were deployed to keep the unrest at bay.
Unless this issues is completely resolved, the retailers and small business owners will need take maximum security measures to avoid any aggressive events to occur in future.
