T-Mobile US Inc (NASDAQ:TMUS) Topples Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE:VZ) To Take The Crown For Fastest LTE In US
T-Mobile US Inc (NASDAQ:TMUS) has been named the fastest LTE in the US according to data findings by OpenSignal.
This means T-Mobile has overtaken its rival, Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE:VZ) to take the top spot but just barely. LTE speeds for both companies tied at an average of 12 Mbps during a recent speed test carried out in 11 of the major cities in the US. T-Mobile emerged on top with 12.3 Mbps while Verizon registered 12.0 Mbps.
The win was however more marginal when the 3G speeds of both companies were compared. T-Mobile registered 3G speeds at 3.5 Mbps while Verizon speeds reached 2.2 Mbps. Sprint Corp (NYSE:S) was nowhere close to the numbers registered by the top two firms. AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T)’s internet speeds reached 7.9 Mbps on 4G and 0.7 Mbps on 3G while Sprint’s speeds registered 6.6 Mbps on LTE and 0.6 Mbps on 3G.
The average LTE internet speeds for all the US carriers was 9.9 Mbps. This is significantly lower than the global average speeds that are handsomely boosted by impressive top carriers such as Singapore and New Zealand whose LTE speeds average 33 Mbps and 36 Mbps respectively. However, the US managed to slide into the top ten list because subscribers can access LTE 81% of the time and also because of its wide coverage considering the size of the country.
All the firms significantly improved their LTE service in the last quarter of 2015 and that boosted the coverage in the country beyond the 80% mark for the first in record. T-Mobile’s win is a huge deal for the company and marks great improvement in its part. A few years ago, the company was far behind the competition. The carrier also attributes its success to its efforts to eradicate flawed fees and contracts.

T-Mobile’s CEO, John Legere has been hard at work to transform the company and his efforts are clearly paying off. OpenSignal also claims that the success has also been driven by the firm’s decision to terminate the 2G spectrum, thus offering more concentration for LTE.
