Starbucks in Trouble? (NASDAQ:SBUX)

128

On Monday, Starbucks (NASDAQ:SBUX) Corporation claimed that they are wrongly being held accountable in numerous petitions on different websites online for showing their support for a Grocery Manufacturing Association trial to restrict the GMO food labeling law of Vermont. Most of these petitions are posted on different websites such as Care2.com and Sumofus.com where people have accused Starbucks (NASDAQ:SBUX) for its blatant support along with another member of Grocery Manufacturing association for cutting off GMO labeling in Vermont.

This May, Vermont turned into the first US state to approve a binding GMO labeling law that did not oblige any other state to go first. In a statement released by the Starbucks (NASDAQ:SBUX), it said that Starbucks (NASDAQ:SBUX) does not have any role in the lawsuit concerning GMO labeling. The representative of GMA, Brian Kennedy, went on to say that Starbucks (NASDAQ:SBUX) or Monsanto are not trying to topple Vermont’s GMO labeling Act.

The internal archives of GMA which were documented over a year ago as part of the litigation trial revealed that the members contributed to a “Defence of Brands Strategic Account” which was devised to fund projects by the industry which in turn would help to address the threats that were prompted by highly motivated activists. The spokesperson for GMA, Brian Kennedy decided not to respond to any of the questions concerning these documents.

The people who support this petition are very close to achieving their objective of gathering almost 500,000 signatures online. The most renowned of these supported is perhaps Neil Young who is a singer and a songwriter. He has promised on his website that he has boycotted Starbucks (NASDAQ:SBUX) over the issue regarding GMO. Young is also urging all his fans and supporters to sign these petitions because they have a right to know what goes in their mouths.

The petitions further demand that Starbucks (NASDAQ:SBUX) should end their ties with Grocery Manufacturing Association and should shift to natural milk without any trace of GMO in it. According to Starbucks (NASDAQ:SBUX), its membership in the Grocery Manufacturing Association provides it with an opportunity to express its opinions and views in the debates of the food industry.  The Grocery Manufacturing Association alongside partners and supporters like PepsiCo Inc. (NYSE:PEP), Monsanto (NYSE:MON) and Kellog Co. (NYSE:K) has made use of millions of dollars to win against GMO labeling ballot measures in the states of Colorado, Oregon, California and Washington.

Although many people critics advocate the effectiveness, viability, ecological effects and safety of crops engineered genetically, some very significant companies and corporations are now avoiding GMOs in their products. The immensely popular burrito and tacos selling restaurant Chipotle Mexican Grill (NYSE:CMG) has cut practically all GMOs from its products. McDonald’s Corporation, one of the biggest names in the food industry has said that it would now utilize the recently sanctioned genetically modified potatoes from its long term supplier J.R. Simplot to prepare its celebrated fries or any other food for that matter.
