As Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s success story has been never ending this year, it about time the competitor’s respond and give consumers a device that would make the iPhone,s last year’s story. In a similar attempt, Samsung (NASDAQOTH:SSNLF) launched the Galaxy Note Edge on November 14. The note edge is a 5.6 phablet with a curved screen that wraps around neatly on the right edge. This device is considered a premium flagship to stand against Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s iPhone 6 Plus. However, Samsung (NASDAQOTH:SSNLF) might have delayed the bounce-back process.
Despite launching a whole variety of phones last year, Samsung (NASDAQOTH:SSNLF) faced a disappointing fall in the global market when its shares fell 32.5% in the third quarter of 2013 to 23.8% in 2014. Whereas last year, when Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) launched its iPhone 5S and 5C, it only suffered a minor fall from 12.9% to 12%, but the release of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus made up for it this year. And the company enjoyed a 16% rise year over year.
But Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) wasn’t the only problem Samsung (NASDAQOTH:SSNLF) had. It had an entire market to compete with when it came to Android sets that looked and functioned similarly. It also targeted Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) by modifying Android with TouchWiz and having its own App store. But this wasn’t enough as Samsung (NASDAQOTH:SSNLF) was facing failure at all ends. It needed to be extra innovative if it wanted to be a step ahead. So the implementation of premium phone with a big screen was an attempt to beat Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL). Samsung (NASDAQOTH:SSNLF) made sure that its specs stood ahead in most of the iPhone 6 features, these included features like display, CPU/RAM, internal storage, camera and battery.
But all these extra icing has led to the Note Edge being more pricey. This however breaks the Samsung (NASDAQOTH:SSNLF) tradition of launching gadgets slightly cheaper than Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL). Speculators believe this move comes as an attempt by Samsung (NASDAQOTH:SSNLF) to reposition itself as a premium brand. But Samsung (NASDAQOTH:SSNLF) seems to be forgetting that Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) has over 41.7% loyal customers and to convince them to make a switch would be next to impossible. So Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) doesn’t only have brand loyalty but also market dominance and this doesn’t only come in form of smart phones but also Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) Pay, HealthKit and HomeKit. Even though Samsung (NASDAQOTH: SSNLF) offers similar features, but in partnership with other brands and even then they aren’t up to the level of Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL).
Considering all the above features, can one conclude whether or not the launch of the Galaxy Edge Note is enough for Samsung (NASDAQOTH:SSNLF) to win over the Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) customers. It seems highly unlikely. The Edge’s only selling point is its sleek curved screen along with a few widgets and tickers. But its high price and no competitive feature for payment, health care is likely to make the handset a flop and might be considered as a pricey version of the Galaxy Note 4.
