Many high financed, highly-marketed latest devices have been launched recently by companies like Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), Barnes and Noble Inc. (NYSE:BKS) and many others. Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) however abstained from any such tactic and it has suddenly and quietly revealed an addition to its Kindle devices, all running on new operating systems. The launch event took place in Los Angeles and unlike other events, it was nothing big. Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) wanted to prove a point that the latest fashion of spending huge amounts of money is extravagant spending which would not do its stakeholders any good.
Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) revealed the launch of the new devices late at night, along with its specifications. The devices included an exclusive tablet with Kindle Fire HDX, a budget e-reader with Kindle, a budget tablet with Fire HD, a tablet for little kids which had the Fire HD in kids’ edition and a sophisticated e-reader with Kindle Voyage.
Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) too had launched its devices last week but in a completely different way. They had the event broadcasted internationally in Cupertino. On the other hand, Samsung and Barnes and Noble Inc. (NYSE:BKS) also flaunted their new devices at a showy event in Union Square, New York.
Amazon’s (NASDAQ:AMZN) latest kindle devices have some amazing specifications, for example its tablet with Kindle Fire HDX has an 8.9 inch screen. It has a 2.5 GHz processor which weighs about 13.2 ounces. The company states that their processor weighs 20% less than the processor of iPad air! The display is 339 pixel/inch; with a new feature that makes the turning pages sound like real papers. The cost of the tablet is $379.
As for the HD kids’ edition tablet, it has a warranty of 2 years because according to the company, kids easily break things. The tablet has already installed books, different applications, and TV shows along with children movies. The display of six inches costs $149 whereas the display of seven inches costs $189.
The Fire HD tablet is the most inexpensive one with the six inch display costing around $99 and another with a seven inch display costing $139. The tablet has a 1.5 GHz processor but the screen has a lesser resolution as compared to the HDX. Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) has claimed that Samsung’s Tab 4 is slower than their HD tablet which can run graphically comprehensive games extremely well.
Amazon’s (NASDAQ:AMZN) Kindle Voyage e-reader is the most light-weight and slimmest of all. It weighs 6.2 ounces and its thickness is around 7.6 mm. The e-reader has a paper-white display similar to the company’s previous Kindle PaperWhite. The brightness adjusts automatically. The tablet is 3G enabled so that the books can be downloaded easily. However it is more costly than the previous version PaperWhite, as it costs $199 including shipping.
Kindle e-reader is simple and inexpensive with a basic touchscreen costing only $79. The new operating system that the company used is Sangria which has many new features, all that the new kindle devices run on.
