Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB)’s ‘egg freezing’ offer sparks debate on female work force

Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) claims to be quite generous to its employees; specially the female population. They are entitled to free meals, a 4 month long maternity leave, medical care as well as car wash. However, the company has recently faced severe backlash for its most recent incentive; cover for egg-freezing operation for female employees who wish to hold off birth. Some female employees look at this as a great perk, while others consider it absurd.

A large section of the female work force at Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) have rejected the idea, calling it, the company’s efforts to avoid the debate of equal pays for both genders. It’s a fact that a female in U.S earns 77 percent of what the male earns by doing the same work.

Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB), however insists that there motive is different. The company claims that treating your customer fair is what it endeavours to do. Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) respects its employees and cares about their personal matters. If Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) can be a help to its employee in any way, it ensures help and support in all matters. This incentive is being introduced by several other companies as well.

Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) has gone on to explain that there are several factors that it has considered before launching this incentive. First is to ascertain whether the employee is financially stable to ensure child support. Secondly, single parents may find such a situation quite challenging. Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) will offer $20,000 to female employee who are willing to undergo the process.

Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) also emphasized that there is no government funded organization in U.S that will cater to such issues. It is usually a company incentive to attract and keep employees. Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) is doing just that, and there are certainly not any hidden agendas to these perks.

Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) also provides services like fertility treatment, surrogate mothers for homosexual couples and sperm bank access. Apple (NASDAQ: APPL) has also come up with the same incentive. However, it is facing similar feedback. Jessica Cussins from Center for Genetics and Society has rendered this perk as a means to ensure that female employees spend their lives working for the company with no family to distract them.

Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) feels that these incentives are quite reasonable and for the best interests for their employees. According to the statistics released by the Center for American progress, women make up 47% of the workforce, but only 16.6% of senior positions are chaired by them. Such huge differences in the wages and corporate positions held by men and women are not only limited to the U.S., the trends are similar globally. Hence, such negative feedbacks don’t come as a surprise. Women have been deprived off the fair share from the pie chart. The companies that launch such incentives for female work force need to ensure that they succeed in satisfying their employees. Also there is a need to revise the unfair pay policy difference between genders.
