Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB), Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co (NYSE:HPE) and Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Support Samsung’s Appeal to Supreme Court
While Samsung requests the U.S Supreme Court to take up its long-running patent dispute against Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL), Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL)’s Google and Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) have joined in.
Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co (NYSE:HPE) has also extended support to Samsung’s appeal. Samsung has been appealing of its patent loss to Apple over the issue of copying Apple’s iPhone technology. The tech giants warned the High Court in friend-of-the-court briefs.
According to these tech behemoths, the outcome against Samsung is likely to cause irrational results and might as well have devastating effects on companies. The tech giants were deeply concerned with the long-term impact and how patent law is applied to technology products, like smartphones.
Samsung has already had to cut a cheque to Apple worth more than $500 million as penalty for patent violations and yet the company is likely to suffer more penalties. In December, Samsung’s appeal gave the nation’s High Court a good opportunity to weigh in on what may be the most high-profiled tech conflict.
The U.S Federal Circuit Court of Appeal rejected Samsung’s argument last year and was backing Apple. That leaves the Supreme Court as the only legal alternative left for Samsung. Meanwhile, Samsung has a list of supporters hoping to have the patent issue clarified. Many of these supporting companies sided with Samsung while the Federal Circuit sided with Apple.
Speaking of support, many other tech companies, non-profit organizations and legal experts are joining in the request, not because they support Samsung, but because they understand the implications.

The Judicial System often comes under fire if less effort is used to stop patent trolls and, therefore, a decision by the Supreme Court is very likely to be a game changer. Samsung’s Idea is to throw their weight behind the patent violation case. There is the likelihood that that will convince the federal government to make reforms on patent trolls. A major electronic retailer, Newegg, filed an amicus brief in the Supreme Court alongside Google and other tech companies and now farmers and small businesses have done the same. However, reports indicate that Samsung declined to comment about the amicus briefs while Apple failed to respond immediately to the request for comment.
