Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN)’s new Lambda cloud service
Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN)’s Chief Technology Officer Werner Vogels this week in a big user conference held annually in Las Vegas made the long awaited announcement which was expected by its spectators. He announced new products, a few costumer wins, enhanced docker support and production of a new generation of chips to enhance the performance of running applications. But the one announcement that has left the analysts curious, excited and confused at the same time is the disclosure of its new technology of lambda cloud service.
According to the CTO it’s an event driven computing service to run and manage dynamic applications. The announcement sounds like just another service present in Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN)’s cloud portfolio but in reality it’s an instrument to implement commands that carry out complex tasks without any configuration or extensive maintenance. This could be a major advancement in the field of cloud technology.
According to David Floyer the Chief technology officer at a technology analysis firm, it’s a revolutionary advancement in this field. According to Floyer the Lambda would enable program developers to write those programs and applications with more ease and fluency which can be ordinarily very difficult to design. According to him the internet of things will find it very useful and would direct data from connected devices within applications.
He perceives it as one of the greatest achievements from a competitive viewpoint. He further said that he never saw it coming. That this advancement of Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) is going to have some serious impact on its competitors like Google (NASDAQ:GOOGL) and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT). He says that people at the same time also see this as a reinvention within the existing cloud technology. Moreover the developer Todd Hoff in his blog ‘high scalability’ describes Lambda as a super set of its platform as a service cloud or Paas++.
According to him it simply executed the coded lines abstracting away the hardware’s fundamental applications. As he appreciated Lambda’s potential,he at the same time warns about its current shortcomings as well. According to him it currently is only supporting the Node.js server of java script runtime plus just a small amount of events. He further says that even with current demerits Lambda cloud is offering the developers with unique attributes like cloud infrastructure.
He considers it an extremely hard to pull off deal. Adrian Cockroft, another technology expert at battery Ventures and former Netflix’s cloud expert briefly describes it in an email by pointing out its unique feature of Node meeting IFTTT as a service. According to him it’s a powerful tool for the developers looking to design new applications. He says that it’s not yet clear how long will it take to move processes in Lambda from Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) to other clouding services or onto any internal data source of any company.
A former Gartner analyst, who currently works at the marketing department ofa startup called ‘signal fuse’ describes lambda’s potential as an ultimate lock capable of possessing strategic power moves.
