Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) hatches home-delivery plan, Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) beware
Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) might be planning to use its autonomous vehicle technology to deliver goods. The company patented technology for self-driving trucks to make deliveries.
Google’s plan is brilliant because its autonomous technology is already being tested and has received a lot of recognition in the tech industry. The firm has thus already established platforms that can turn the vision into a reality. The company has also cleverly outwitted firms such as Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) which seems to have aimed too high with the drone delivery service.
Amazon’s plan has not gained the necessary traction that it needs because of various reasons including strict regulations by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), power limitations weight limitations. Google’s plan on the other hand just needs to replace the driver with its self-driving technology.
The patent indicates that the trucks will be used to ferry packages to various destinations where the owners can pick them up. It also suggests that the technology will feature lockers that have been fitted with payment processing technology. People registered to the service will require passwords to access their packages in the lockers. The documents also indicate that payment will be made via Near Field Communication (NFC) or credit cards. This means users will pay for the services upon delivery, thus acting as a self-driving vending machine.
The technology proposes transportation over short distances rather than shipping across states because it would be trickier considering the vehicles are self-driven. This technology would also be ideal in suburbs and urban centers where drones will most likely not be allowed. Google is also working on platforms for drone technology to complement autonomous truck deliveries. It will be an exciting and innovative way for the company to offer services through the use of modern technology.
A few other firms have also shown interest in such ideas including a startup by Skype co-founders Janus Friss and Ahti Heinla. They reckon that they can deliver packages through self-driven carts that move along the sidewalks. As for autonomous vehicles, more automotive firms are venturing into the technology.
